Court Watch: Britney's Jury Deadlocked
Posted on October 21, 2008
The trial for Britney Spears' August 6, 2007 fender bender where she was
charged with driving-without-a-license ended in a deadlock yesterday.
After the jury reported that they could not reach a unanimous decision,
Judge James Steele made the the jurors continue deliberating, although
they were not able to reach a verdict and the case was deemed a mistrial.
Both
the prosecution and the defense were allowed another 11 minutes to
restate their cases this morning, in hopes that it would spur the
jurors into agreement. They remained 10 to 2, although it has not been
released whether the majority thought Britney was guilty or innocent of
the charges.
Britney did not attend
any part of the trial. She faced up to six months in jail and a $1,000 fine if she was convicted of the misdemeanor charge.
Britney's defense
maintained that she was not required to carry a California license
because she considers Kentwood, Louisiana her true home and held a
valid Louisiana driver's license at the time of the incident.
